BNY Mellon Establishes Asia Pacific Advisory Council to Advance Its Strategic Growth Plans in the Region

Advisory Council of financial industry leaders in some of the region’s fastest growing markets as BNY Mellon capitalizes on new growth opportunities and delivers pioneering solutions to its clients

BNY Mellon today announced the establishment of an Asia Pacific Advisory Council to continue advancing the company’s strategic growth agenda in the region and support its clients’ success in Asia Pacific and around the world.

The Advisory Council will provide insights and guidance to BNY Mellon’s leadership team as they accelerate momentum in some of the region’s fastest growing markets. The founding members, each of whom brings extensive experience as a central banker, practitioner or policymaker, include:

  • Eiji Hirano, Director and Vice Chairman of MetLife Insurance K.K. (MetLife Japan)
  • Jong Nam Oh, Senior Advisor at Kim & Chang
  • Zili Shao, Senior Advisor at Fangda Partners

Eiji Hirano

Director and Vice Chairman of MetLife Insurance K.K. (MetLife Japan) 

Eiji Hirano serves as a member of the Board of Directors and Vice Chairman of MetLife Japan, which he joined in 2014. He also sits on the boards of NTTDATA Co., Riken Co., and Ichiyoshi Securities Co.

Mr. Hirano has accumulated extensive expertise in public policy, international finance, payment system, and corporate governance through his experience at the Bank of Japan and several other private institutions. He was Chairperson of the Board of Governors of the Government Pension Investment Fund, Japan from 2017 to 2021, strengthening the fund’s governance structures.

From 2006 to 2014, he worked for Toyota Financial Services Corporation as Executive Vice President and mainly managed its international business.

From 1973 to 2006, Mr. Hirano was with the Bank of Japan, where he served as Director-General of the International Department and as Assistant Governor.

Jong Nam Oh

Senior Advisor at Kim & Chang

Jong Nam Oh is a veteran advisor in the world of finance, with decades of experience consulting for global, regional and national business leaders. He joined Kim & Chang, one of Asia’s most renowned law firms, in 2008 and has served as Chair of the Board of Directors at ezCaretech since 2021. In addition to being an outside director at SNU Holdings, he also currently holds an academic post as a Professor (Emeritus), Science and Policy Advanced Research Course at Seoul National University.

Dr. Oh has held a wide range of board and director positions over the past two decades, including serving as Chair of the Board at Standard Chartered Bank Korea, UNICEF Korea, Samsung Securities and GM Korea.

He also served in senior positions at the International Monetary Fund, having first joined the institution in 1999 as an Alternative Executive Director and later rejoining as Executive Director from 2004 until 2006.

Dr. Oh worked in the Korean government for close to three decades between 1975 and 2004, spending the majority of his tenure at the Economic Planning Board, Ministry of Finance and Economy, as well as the Office of the President and Statistics Korea.

Zili Shao
Senior Advisor at Fangda Partners

Zili Shao is an accomplished investment banker and lawyer with extensive experience in the financial and legal industries. Mr. Shao founded MountVue Capital Management in 2017, after having spent the two years prior at King & Wood Mallesons China as Co-Chairman and Partner.

From 2010 to 2015, Mr. Shao held various positions at JP Morgan Chase & Co., including roles such as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of JP Morgan China and Vice Chairman of JP Morgan Asia Pacific.

Prior to JP Morgan, he spent 12 years at Linklaters LLP, a leading international law firm, as managing partner for Greater China and subsequently managing partner of the Asia Pacific region.

Mr. Shao has extensive public company board and corporate governance experience, and currently sits on the boards of Energias de Portugal, Ares SSG Capital Management, Bank of Montreal (China) and Yum China Holdings.
