About Us
BNY is a global financial services platforms company entrusted to oversee over $57 trillion* in assets for clients around the world. Through our platforms, we help power the global financial system, combining expertise and technology to help our clients unlock greater efficiency, drive growth and achieve their ambitions.
In 1970, BNY established a presence in Tokyo, Japan. Since then, our work in Japan has been defined by a desire to innovate and drive positive change for our clients.
By connecting with our global network, which provides services in more than 100 markets, we seamlessly integrate our wide range of capabilities and comprehensive solutions, including Asset Servicing, Asset Management, Treasury Services, Foreign Exchange and Liquidity Services, Depositary Receipts, Corporate Trust and Clearance and Collateral Management, to help our Japanese clients conduct business and transact in markets around the world.
In addition, BNY Japan remains steadfast in supporting the Government of Japan’s policy plans to reform Japan as a leading asset management center. No matter what the future brings, we’ll be ready, and we’ll be working — making money work for the world.

Our Milestones
1970
Established Tokyo representative office
1973
Launched Tokyo Branch to provide full range of institutional financial services in Japan.
1987
Provided global custody and securities lending services to a major Japanese financial institution.
1989
Created the first NYSE-listed American Depositary Receipts (ADR) for a Japanese bank.
1998
Established BNY Asset Management Japan Limited (renamed as BNY Mellon Investment Management Japan Limited in 2020).
1999
Provided ADR services to the first U.S. single listed program among Japanese companies
2006
Established The Bank of New York Mellon Securities Company Japan Ltd
2006
Launched GW Select Fund "Best Nine" for a major securities firm
2007
Served as collateral agent for first tri-party repurchase agreement in Japan
2008
Launched a full range of fund administrative services for offshore funds and private equity funds for Japanese financial institutions
2009
Developed comprehensive U.S. securities clearing services for one of Japan's major broker-dealers
2009
Completed acquisition of an established Trust Bank business in Japan – The Bank of New York Mellon Trust (Japan), Ltd.
2010
Launched Global High Yield Bond Fund – the first product for bank OTC distribution channel

Launched Global Collateral Services, which provides comprehensive services for secured transactions
