AI: A multi-asset story

AI: A multi-asset story

Artificial intelligence (AI) is prompting investors to rethink risk and asset allocation. Portfolios that look diversified on paper can still depend heavily on a narrow group of companies driving the current AI cycle.

The dot-com bubble of 2000 showed how quickly market concentration can move, so it is important to understand where value may move next. Those who do may be better placed to build portfolios that keep clients engaged through uncertainty.

  • Rethink diversification. Global bonds and equities are exposed to the same AI capital-spending cycle. Allocating capital across asset classes no longer guarantees spreading risk.
  • Watch the bottlenecks. Value flows into whichever link in the AI supply chain is hardest to scale – chips today, but memory, energy or infrastructure tomorrow. Returns tend to follow the constraint.
  • Understand exposure. It can help to classify AI holdings as enablers, platforms or adopters. Each carry different potential risk and knowing recognising them early can help to manage them.
  • Anchor with a multi-asset framework. Disciplined position sizing and a fixed income ballast can help build resilience so short-term losses do not become permanent ones.

In a real regime shift?
Chart of the Week | Makroökonomisch

Higher inflation has been a dominant theme of the current decade. In addition to price shocks, it is being shaped by secular investment trends in infrastructure, defense spending, onshoring and the ongoing AI buildout. These structural changes reinforce the case for looking beyond traditional 60/40 portfolios to include real assets as a source of diversification and return potential in portfolios.

The big picture: Leaders, laggards and the rotation in between
Artikel | Makroökonomisch

Leadership doesn't stand still. Yesterday’s winners may feel like tomorrow’s leaders, but this quilt shows how quickly top performers can fall from favor. As seen here, commodities went from one of the top-performing asset classes in 2022 to one of the weakest performers in 2023. This rotation is hard to predict, and uncertainty is inherent to investing.
