The Bank of New York Appointed Successor Depositary Bank for Controladora Comercial Mexicana, S.A. de C.V.

NEW YORK, N.Y., September 22, 2003 -- The Bank of New York announced today that it has been selected as successor depositary for the Controladora Comercial Mexicana, S.A. de C.V. (CCM) American depositary receipt (ADR) facility.  Each CCM ADR represents twenty common shares.  The common shares trade in Mexico on the Bolsa Mexicana de Valores, and the ADRs trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "MCM."

CCM is a Mexican holding company, which, through its subsidiaries, operates retail operations through five chain stores: Comercial Mexicana, Bodega, Mega, Sumesa and, through a joint venture with Costco of the United States, Costco Stores.  In addition, the company operates a chain of family restaurants. 

The Bank of New York is the world’s largest depositary for American and global depositary receipts, allowing non-U.S. companies to offer dollar-denominated securities to investors worldwide.  The Bank currently issues depositary receipts for more than 1,400 programs representing 70 countries and accounts for 67% of all public sponsored depositary receipt programs.
